Where it all started

Our wellbeing committee was formed in May. It’s an open group that anyone can join from c3. The purpose of the committee is to continuously improve workplace happiness and culture – which is paramount, especially as our headcount continues to grow.

Mental health is so important, especially in the workplace. Statistics show that 1 in 6 workers will experience depression, anxiety or problems relating to stress at any one time.

COVID-19 has also had a detrimental effect on people’s mental health, as many of us have struggled with social isolation and working from home. To uplift the team, we wanted to arrange events, activities and show ways of appreciation.

A few months back we ran a mental health week event at c3 – you can watch it here. We organised in-office (at a safe capacity) and virtual activities such as yoga, massages, pizza and drinks, to cater to as many people as possible and give people the chance to de-stress.

With this in mind, we wanted to go a step further… by running an event that would improve employees’ mental health, whilst also raising money for a good cause.

The event

With it being summer, we thought we’d take advantage of the sunny weather and encourage people to engage in physical activity – which research shows has been proven to reduce anxiety and depression.

So, we came up with the idea of: ‘c3 climbs Kilimanjaro’. We asked the team to collate the number of steps it would take to walk up to Kilimanjaro and back down again (128,263) during the whole of July. To raise money, we set up a JustGiving page and shared it on social media to promote it and raise even more funds.

The charity

The charity we have chosen is Candlelighters Trust, who are a local Yorkshire charity that supports families facing children’s cancer. They offer a range of services, and invest significantly in vital research, education and training to improve the outcomes and lives of children and their families affected by childhood cancer. In the last 20 years alone, they have invested over £9m into cancer research in a range of different areas to benefit young cancer patients.

As our headquarters are in Leeds, we thought it would only be fitting to support a local charity that had a special place in our hearts.

The results

We achieved 5,642,656 steps and raised over £325 for charity – the team have absolutely smashed it out the park. Quite literally…
